FIFA President Sepp Blatter has paid tribute to former Liverpool winger Jimmy Payne who died recently at the age of 86.

Bootle-born Payne, who scored 43 goals in 243 appearances for the Reds between 1948 and 1956, was the last surviving member of the club's 1950 FA Cup final side.

In a letter to FA chairman David Bernstein, Blatter said: “On behalf of the members of the international football family who had the pleasure of knowing Jimmy Payne, I should be extremely grateful if you could extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Jimmy, as well as to all the members of the Football Association.

“I know that Jimmy Payne devoted his life to football. Our friend will be sorely missed.”
