LAST Wednesday evening saw Poulton Vics, inspired by two-goal hit-man Mike Bates, come from a goal down to beat arch-rivals Cammell Laird 3-1 in a tense Carlsberg West Cheshire League Pyke Cup first round replay.

Craig Cartwright was the other marksman and on Saturday, Bates again weaved his magic after joining Gary Reay and Robbie Tynan on the scoresheet to steer Vics into the last eight of the Wirral FA Senior Cup, courtesy of a 3-2 result over Vauxhall Motors Reserves.

Neil McCann and Lee Kissock netted the Motormen' s consolations.

Also in the Wirral Senior, Division Two outfit New Brighton pulled off the result of the round when they eliminated current Division One leaders Newton, with Gordon Harrison and Nick Kyriazas on target in the 2-1 triumph, Joey Gibiliru replying.

Four-goal Tony McMullen was the mainspring behind Cammell Laird's 8-2 rout of Capenhurst Villa. Brian McIlroy weighed in with a hat-trick and John Collins was the other scorer with Gareth Hibbs and Craig Newnes answering for Cape.

Steve Thompson gave Heswall the lead at Manor Athletic and although the home side got back on terms via an own goal, further efforts from Paul Wiggins and Mike McGraa set Heswall up for a 3-1 win.

The quarter final draw, scheduled for January 17, reads as follows: -Ashville v Mallaby; Ellesmere Port/Castrol Social v Cammell Laird; Poulton Vics v Heswall; West Kirby v New Brighton. (Holders - West Kirby).

Liverpool based Maghull Reserves scored through Dave Hughes and Ian Owen to finish 2-2 with Collegiate OB Reserves in the Liverpool Junior Cup quarter finals, before winning 4-3 on penalties after extra time.

Chester Senior Cup holders Chester Nomads breezed into the last four of this season's competition, after Mark Kerr, Dale Harris, Tim Barnes and Dan Ryder netted in Saturday's 4-1 eclipse of Kelsall.

In Division One, Mallaby ended a four game losing sequence, a 74th minute goal from debutant Matty Houghton clinching all three points against Maghull while 90 minutes failed to produce a goal between Manweb and West Kirby.

Division Two leaders Mersey-side Police paid Christleton Reserves a visit and came away with maximum returns, Mark Ellison (2), Chris Killen and Paul Jones obliging in the 4-0 victory.

Second placed Cammell Laird Reserves were helped to a 5-3 success against FC Pensby by efforts from Shaun Holmes, Andy Pugh, John Morgan, Kevin Thompson and an own goal. Pensby's contribution came from Karl Tatler (2) and Gary Owen.

A double from Tony Spell-man, allied to a single from Jordan Wright, put unbeaten Division Three leaders Manweb Reserves on course for a 3-1 result at Grange Athletic, confirming the leaders' 12th consecutive league win and a 13 points lead.

Chris Wallace's goal for New Brighton Reserves was cancelled out by a reply from Mersey Royal's Peter Courtney, while Jack Rice plundered the game's only goal as Bronze Social beat Elles-mere Port Reserves.
