Speed kills and Chester FC have it.

Using it effectively and consistently is the next step.

Strikers Oluwaseun Akintunde, James Alabi and Kane Richards, as well as wingers Elliott Durrell and Craig Mahon, form a pacy Blues forward line.

Boss Jon McCarthy says it was key trait the club had been looking for in their summer signings.

He said: "I want pace in my team and I want players who go past people.

"I have Elliott Durrell, Craig Mahon, Oluwaseun Akintunde, James Alabi and Kane Richards and they will all do that.

"You have four or five of those in your team who can do that and you are on to something.

"Defenders don't want to play against it and I have learnt that from this league."

Akintunde and Richards linked well as a strike force in the recent wins over Guiseley and Braintree, latching onto through balls and drifting into wide areas where they were able to run at defences.

Alabi is also a willing chaser and provided an outlet from the bench.

For the wingers they can skip away from a challenge or create the space to cross while being closed down.

In the National League where physical centre backs are the norm, pace to get in behind can be a real asset.

As matches draw on and open up, Chester can exploit the opportunity to counter attack at speed if they can be more clinical with their chances.

McCarthy said the club had actively sought out quick players to fit the team's identity.

The Blues manager said: "They've got quality and they're young and they've got to learn to have more end product, but I can see how defenders fear them when they come up against them.

"So yes, it's a definite characteristic I had in mind when I was assembling my team and that's why I've got so many of them."
