Chester FC’s squad rebuild for next season has continued apace with the acquisition of Alfreton Town goalkeeper Jon Worsnop.

Worsnop, 31, is no stranger to Chester having been understudy to Wayne Brown in 2002 after he joined the club as a graduate of Bradford City’s youth academy.

He only made one appearance for Chester and has since taken in spells at Leigh Genesis and FC United of Manchester before he made the switch to the Impact Arena in December 2013, where he was a virtual ever present and helped the Derbyshire side to a respectable 11th placed finish in the Conference North.

Worsnop joins striker Sean McConville and defenders Danny Taylor and Kieran Charnock in penning deals with Steve Burr’s men for next season.

Burr said: “I’m delighted to have signed Jon. He was instrumental in Alfreton’s successful season last year and I know he is a great keeper to have.

“He has a Chester background, of course, and is keen to do well for us, and will help out on the goalkeeping coaching side of things too.”

What league Worsnop will be donning the gloves in next year is unclear.

Hereford United had been widely expected to be expelled from the Football Conference at a League board meeting at Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, yesterday, but after a four-hour meeting were granted until this morning to pay their football creditors, ahead of the League AGM.

If they do not pay their creditors on time, having already missed a 5pm deadline on Friday for doing so, the Bulls could still yet be expelled, handing Chester a possible reprieve from relegation.
