Speed kills

Chester FC manager Jon McCarthy has been speaking about how the speed in the Blues side makes them a threat to National League defences.

He said: "I want pace in my team and I want players who go past people.

"I have Elliott Durrell, Craig Mahon, Oluwaseun Akintunde, James Alabi and Kane Richards and they will all do that.

"You have four or five of those in your team who can do that and you are on to something.

"Defenders don't want to play against it and I have learnt that from this league."

Walking football

Chester FC's walking football team

From pace to pacing. Chester FC are looking for new players to join their walking football squad.

The fast-growing sport gives older footballers who might not have the legs for 11-a-side a chance to stay active.

While the rules are much the same as the traditional game, it is minimal contact and running is penalised with a free-kick awarded to the opposition.

Chester FC Community Trust chief executive Jim Green said: “Walking football continues to grow in popularity and it's proven to be a fantastic means of helping people to keep active, make new friends and stay fit and healthy.

“Our coaches run weekly walking football sessions where everyone is welcome to give the game a go and the league provides a fantastic opportunity for players over 50 to represent Chester FC on a regular basis.”

You are doing well if you can remember Alex Meechan's eight appearances for Chester City in 2007.

The journeyman midfielder played for almost 20 clubs including Forest Green, Altrincham and York over a long career.

In June he was appointed manager of Bradford Park Avenue, but his stint in charge is already over.

Yesterday the 36-year-old was 'relieved of his duties', with the side bottom of the National League North.

A club statement said Meechan will 'continue his role as the coach of the new Avenue academy'.
