Carl Macauley has left his post as assistant manager at Chester FC to become the new boss at Northern Premier League side Marine.

Former Vauxhall Motors manager Macauley will be joined at The Arriva Stadium by his former backroom team at Motors, Gary Martindale and Anthony Wright, who had been in caretaker charge of the Rivacre Park side in the Conference North this season, guiding them clear of relegation in what was the Ellesmere Port side's final season in the league before dropping down to the West Cheshire League next season due to financial difficulties.

Macauley linked up with Steve Burr at the Swansway Chester Stadium back in March after leaving Motors, but admitted to the Chronicle recently that he would be unlikely to continue in the capacity should the club push ahead with their plans for full-time status following their relegation from the Conference Premier on the final day of the season last month.

Macauley, who also works as a Liverpool FC Foundation coach, operated on a shoestring budget at Rivacre Park but won the respect of those in non-league circles, with the his appointment as Marine manager likely to be viewed as a shrewd one by Mariners fans.

"Myself and my staff quickly wanted to get back involved in football and this was an opportunity we couldn't knock back," Macauley said.

"And we believe that this time we can be getting results to push us in the right direction and towards the play-offs because at Vauxhall it was just about trying to survive each season.

"This club has good tradition, it is a family club and is in a great catchment area for really, really good players. Marine are a big club."
