Airbus UK Broughton will become the third Welsh Premier League side to play on a synthetic pitch next season – a move which boss Andy Preece says will secure the club’s long-term future, writes Dave Goodban.

And the news has even been welcomed by Wales team manager Chris Coleman.

The Wingmakers yesterday confirmed that work will start later this month on the state-of-the-art 3G surface at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium following an investment of nearly £500,000.

“This is not only excellent news for the football club, but also for the community in Broughton and the surrounding areas,” said chairman Paul McKinlay. “The club and the company work in partnership to encourage involvement in football in the community, and – with the potential for all-year-round use – we believe the stadium will be a real community hub delivering an excellent facility for participation in sport.”

Heavy rainfall and drainage problems led to a regularly waterlogged pitch this season. Call-offs meant the Wingmakers couldn’t play a single home game between December 14 and February 22.

McKinlay said: “Postponements will become a thing of the past. In addition, the pitch will be used extensively by our academy at all ages from seven to 19 and will be available for hire.”

The floodlights at the Airfield will also be upgraded. The project will be funded by £355,000 of UEFA money through a Football Association of Wales grant scheme, with the Airbus Sports & Social Club ploughing in another £100,000-plus to meet the shortfall.

Newtown FC are also following in the footsteps of the league’s only full-time club TNS and installing a 3G pitch at Latham Park.

Airbus director of football Preece said: “It’s going to bring massive benefits to the club financially and to the local community, and it’ll be really positive in building a larger fanbase and keeping us competitive while securing the long-term future of the club.”

Wales Manager Chris Coleman said: “It’s fantastic news that the FAW have invested in 3G at another Welsh club. Not only will this improve the standards for the Airbus squads, but will provide the best possible environment for the next generation of Welsh players to improve their skills.

“The 3G facility allows players of all ages and abilities to enjoy the game of football throughout the year. The FAW and its partners in this venture deserve huge credit.”
