A FEROCIOUS innings from Wayne Lamey was cut short but Moorfield extended their winning start with a second successive victory in the Merseyside/Southport Cricket Alliance.

Lamey again crashed his way to a half-century but when he had reached 52 from only 40 balls, he was controversially given out to a catch at the wicket - the batsman being adamant that he hadn't got a touch.

However, Rob Yearsley steered Moorfield home to a five-wicket victory over visiting Liverpool Manweb with a 20-point haul maintaining the Widnes side's early lead in the table.

Moorfield skipper John Eccleshall won the toss and elected to field in sweltering heat.

Manweb scored 144 all out off 44 overs. Pick of the Moorfield bowlers were Yearsley (4-47), Danny Naughton (2-24) and Rob Magee (2-18).

Manweb struck in the first over after tea when Brian Tobin skied one to the inner fielders for a duck.

Fortunately, fellow opener Craig Baxter steadied the ship with a decent 20.

Danny Naughton moved the score on with a comfortable 33 before being given out leg before, ridiculously Moorfield claimed.

Lamey then began to push the run rate - and the score - along.

He started slowly but once his eye was in, he unleashed some fearsome boundary shots - eight fours and a massive six over mid-wicket.

On his exit, it was left to Yearsley to secure the win with 15 not out. Moorfield finished on 146-5 off only 26 overs, limiting Manweb to six points.

Moorfield 2nd travelled to Rainhill and had no luck at all. Rainhill put Moorfield into bat on a decent, low track. Opener Les Atherton continued his early-season form with a decent 25 runs.

Mike Harrison also got into the early 20s while keeper Graham Abbott top-scored with 29 in a total of 139ao, off 49 overs.

Two young Rainhill bowlers, Cummins and Milnes, got four wickets apiece.

Rainhill, in response, scored steadily to reach their target, finishing on 142-7 in 48 overs. Pick of the Moorfield bowlers were Atherton (3-36) and Tom Lunt (2-19).

Saturday sees the 1sts at home to Liverpool Nalgo.

Players are reminded selection takes place immediately after nets tonight at 5.30pm.
