Almost 1,000 spectators descended on Tattenhall Cricket Club on Saturday as some of cricket’s most famous faces helped the club celebrate their 125th anniversary.

Players including former England internationals Phil De Freitas and Devon Malcolm and South African Herschelle Gibbs turned out for the Lashings XI against Tattenhall in glorious sunshine at The Flacca.

The Lashings emerged triumphant in front of a packed crowd, making 238-5, but the Cheshire League Division Two side were impressive, posting 163-9 in their reply.

“It went event better than we anticipated and it was a day that will live long in the memory for those who were there and who took part,” said Tattenhall captain Robin Mulvihill.

“There was close to 1,000 people there and the atmosphere was unbelievable. The Lashings guys were top-class and they made it a very special day.

“As expected, they won, but we did well and we gave them a game.

“The likes of Phil De Freitas and Devon Malcolm were idols of mine growing up, so to have the chance to play against them was just a phenomenal experience for me, and for the rest of the guys.”

It was also a special occasion for young Tattenhall bowler Josh Harding who celebrated his 18th birthday by getting out former India international Wasim Jaffer before catching ex-England Test player Chris Schofield, who had hit an excellent century.

“It was a great experience for all the guys to play their heroes, but for Josh it was very  special,” added Mulvihill.

“To get out two former internationals on you’re 18th birthday isn’t a bad way to celebrate it.”

It was also a special occasion for talented 14-year-old Ben Gibbon, fresh from his Cheshire Cup glory with Tattenhall's under 15 side, who made a stunning catch to dismiss former New Zealand Test player Scott Styris. Gibbon put in a superb performance and was awarded man-of-the-match by Lashings' manager John Lever for his display and was presented with a signed bat for his efforts.
