SAUGHALL clinched promotion as champions on a day of high drama in the Cheshire Alliance.

Going in to their final match of the season on Saturday, the Chester outfit knew that 13 points would be enough with a tough Audlem team standing between them and a place in Division One.

But when news of a defeat for leaders Holmes Chapel against third-placed Trinity filtered through, it put even more pressure on Saughall to get a win.

They duly obliged – sparking wild celebrations on the boundary edge.

Captain Chris Andrews said: “To gain promotion is a wonderful team effort. I’m proud of each and every player.”

Having won the toss, hosts Audlem batted first and made 156-9 (Dipak Jena 3-24). As if further drama was required, thunder and lightning provided the backdrop as both teams strode out for the second innings. Saughall made it home to 157-5 with seven overs remaining, Mike Rowson making 59. Trinity claimed the second promotion slot.

But while they and Saughall were celebrating on Saturday, there was heartache for FRODSHAM. A home loss to Ellesmere Port saw them get relegated.

The curtain came down on Saughall 2nds inaugural season with a home defeat against Haslington.
