Now Lauren aims for Ashes victory

CRICKET: Lauren Griffiths has the Ashes in her sights after helping England’s women’s team clinch the Twenty20 series Down Under.

Wicket-keeper Griffiths, 23, of Guilden Sutton, was a member of the England side which almost inflicted a T20 whitewash on Australia.

They took an unassailable 4-0 lead into Tuesday’s final match in Canberra, but lost by 52 runs as the hosts salvaged some pride by winning what was effectively a dead rubber.

Now former Chester Boughton Hall player Griffiths, who captains Cheshire, is focusing on the one-off Ashes Test, which begins on Saturday.

England go into the big match on a high after outplaying Australia in the T20 matches.

Griffiths was ever-present behind the stumps as her country swept into a 4-0 series lead.

In the fourth match, played earlier this week, she came in to bat at number 10 and hit a quick eight runs off 11 balls before being run out, as England won by 13 runs.

The five-game series had already been clinched days earlier when England won by four wickets, again in Canberra.

Last Friday England secured a five-wicket win victory in Melbourne to set them on their way.

Although she had a hand in two Australian run-outs in Tuesday’s defeat, right-hander Griffiths made only two with the bat before being stumped by her Aussie counterpart.
