SAUGHALL had the better of a Cheshire Alliance Division One draw against Bowdon Vale on Saturday.

Saughall won the toss and got off to an excellent start thanks to a fine 76 from in-form Ben Salisbury, ably backed up by James Huxley (16) and Martin Huxley (31).

At 136-1, it looked like being a big total for the Chester team but the visitors fought back with a flurry of wickets and suddenly 163-7 did not look quite so healthy.

Mike Andrews (11) and Mandeep Singh (16no) wielded the willow in the dying stages to help Saughall to 191-8 before the declaration arrived.

Singh (1-5) struck early in Vale’s response but steady batting frustrated Saughall in the late afternoon sunshine.

The match seemed to be meandering towards a draw before wickets tumbled in a frantic 10-over spell after drinks.

From 97-3, the visitors slumped to 104-8 thanks to paceman Lawrence Gotts (3-44) and spinner Chris Andrews (3-24).

Saughall had six overs to try to prise out the last two wickets but amid a plethora of near misses, Vale’s tail-enders hung on for the draw at 109-8.

FRODSHAM’S home match against Rylands was cancelled.
