BIRKENHEAD PARK had to settle for the runners-up spot in Murray Smith Cheshire County League Division Two as they lost by six wickets at home to Mobberley but they have the satisfaction of promotion.

Irby had a thrilling draw at home to Sale and finish in mid table. Sale were dismissed for 153 with Steve Hurworth and Ian Johnson gaining three wickets each. Irby closed on 153-8 of which Adam Gell made 55 and Andy Peddie 33.

Darren Livermore who has shown impressive form for much of the season top scored for Park with 73

Birkenhead St Mary's accounted for Tarleton by 68 runs in the Merseyside and Southport Alliance and finish third in the table. Steve McGenity top scored with 78 and Sha-keel Nawaz took 6-44.

Parkfield are comfortably in the top 12 which means a Division One place next season. They closed their programme with a 54 runs win at Croston.

Grant Hughes made an undefeated 149 - which is a club record, beating the mark set by John Costain in 1973 of 131 not out against Hale. Hughes hit 20 boundaries and one six and put on 192 for the first wicket with Gary Ratcliffe (41), which is also a club record. He finished the season with 718 league runs - also a club record. Ed McCullough took 4-33.

Parkonians had to settle for a home draw against CH Lady-bridge in Division two of the Meller Braggins Cheshire League. Tim Hitchell made 51 and his brother Mike 47. Tim also claimed 3-7.

Port Sunlight came away seven wickets winners from Sandbach in Division Three but Wirral lost at Over Peover.

John McLennan with 51 and 6-43 could not save Parkfield in the Bromborough Paints Merseyside Competition as they lost by 17 runs at home to St Mary's College Old Boys.

Birkenhead went under by six wickets away to champions elect Old Xaverians.

Parkside won again in the Shammah Nicholls Cheshire Alliance Premiership. The margin was 114 runs at Langley. Castrol had four wickets in hand at Stretton, Ellesmere Port drew at Wilmslow and Cheshire County Officers lost by 108 runs at Aston.

In Division Three Eastham Bromborough made it by two wickets at Capenhurst, Wirral drew against Heaton Mersey and Liscard Central lost by six wickets at home to Saughall.
