Nic Corrigan is relishing this weekend’s trip to rivals Caldy but insists Chester RUFC will not get caught up in the occasion.

Chester overcame a stubborn Huddersfield side 23-17 on Saturday to make a winning start to the new National League Two North season.

Huddersfield held a one-point with six minutes to go but Guy Ford dragged defenders over the line for the match-winning score.

Will Goodwin had touched down before the break, finishing the game with an 18-point haul, but Chester struggled to shake off the stubborn West Yorkshire side.

Director of rugby Corrigan was pleased to get the win and feels his team will improve in the coming weeks.

Corrigan said: “There were a lot of positives for us to take from the game and the performance is something we can build on over the course of the season.

“Huddersfield came to play a very particular type of rugby but the best teams learn how to win and that’s what we have done.

“There was some frustration around our execution but that will come with time as the squad beds in.”

Chester did the double over Caldy last season and the Wirral club will be out for revenge at Paton Field on Sunday (3pm).

Caldy, who appointed former Hare Lane captain Simon Verbickas as head coach in June, lost 45-17 at Hull Ionians at the weekend.

Corrigan said: “We trained very well on Tuesday and I think the weekend brought home that we’ve got a huge challenge ahead and proved how competitive this league will be.

“Caldy have got an ex-Chester player and a very good friend of mine as head coach in Simon Verbickas but the process for us will be no different.

“It’s about us as a group continuing to develop and progress and not about other teams. We’ve named a 23-man provisional squad and we’re having a look at a few things because we want to find the right blend and balance.

“We will go to the club early on Sunday to visit our minis and juniors, as we do every other week, before we go up the road to Caldy and we’re hoping for a good following.

“I think it will be a real ding-dong of a game and we’re all looking forward to it.”

Chester 2nds suffered a heavy defeat Preston Grasshoppers 2nds, losing 57-5 in the Bateman BMW Premier League. Sale 2nds visit Hare Lane this weekend.

Christleton recorded a fine 45-22 win at Moore 2nds in Division Three South thanks to tries from George Bryant (2), Andy Coates (2), Mat Roberts and Jason Callaghan.

Moore trailed 12-3 at the interval but the Swans took charge in the second period and clicked well in defence and attack.

Christleton, who host Anselmians 2nds this weekend, coped well under pressure and sealed the win with two fine scores late on.

Helsby went down 40-0 at Liverpool University in South Lancs and Cheshire Division Three and are at home to Oldershaw on Saturday.
