When you’re coming up against two of the best sides in the division over the same weekend – and you’re part-time – it’s a very difficult task.

But I don’t think we lacked anything in terms of ability and I don’t think we lacked anything in terms of effort, energy and fitness. It was all there.

The difference over the whole weekend between getting something and losing was that we conceded three set-piece goals.

They changed the complexion of the games and it’s something we have to learn to deal with.

On Monday we moved men off posts and into what we see as key areas to try and help the lads who were marking. But naivety cost us again.

You see it every Saturday in the Premier League at corners – people are wrestling with each other to try and stop what has been happening to us. So maybe we’ve got to be a bit cuter in terms of stopping people’s runs.

We’ll work on that but I can only give the information – the actual execution has to be done by the players. And if the players can’t do it, then we have to make changes to the personnel.

It’s basic one-on-one defending. If we’d been done by moving and blocking, then fine.

I would like to say that the fans who came on Saturday and on Monday were fantastic.

They stuck behind the team and realised and recognised how hard the players had worked, particularly on Monday when the main stood up to applaud them off the pitch.

They can see they’re putting in the effort. Yes we’re lacking a little bit of quality but you’ve got to realise what level we’re at.

Steve Burr, the Kidderminster manager, said to me on Saturday the chasm between the Conference Premier and the Conference North is unbelievable – and he’s right.

I keep hearing that last season’s squad would have done this, that or the other. But you’ve got to remember that most of the lads who were in the starting XI are still here and the ones who aren’t are either playing at a higher level or couldn’t stay because of the travelling.

We have to stay positive. Who would have thought three years ago we would be playing Wrexham again?
