Jordan Williams says he and his Cheshire Phoenix team-mates want to turn the Cheshire Oaks Arena into a fortress in the BBL this season to keep the fans coming back for more.

In front of almost 1,400 fans at their new home the Nix were beaten by rivals Manchester Giants on September 20, going down to a disappointing 87-75 reverse.

And shooting guard Williams, who joined the club after finishing a standout NCAA Division One college career with the University of North Texas (UNT) earlier this year, wants to ensure that such a result doesn’t happen too often so that fans can watch a winning team at their new arena.

“The crowd was amazing,” said Williams, who has started life with the Nix is impressive fashion and drained 24 points in Saturday’s win over Bristol Flyers.

“But as a team we feel as that we must win so that there will be fans like that at every game supporting us because it just feels like a extra man with us on the floor when the fans are in full capacity and cheering us on.

“We let one slip away at home against a group of guys that had chemistry between each other and they stuck to their plan and pulled it out.

“But we got back in the gym and worked in our mistakes and put it to the floor against Bristol.”

Williams had a fine career at North Texas, with the Dallas native finishing his college career as the ninth highest scoring player in UNT with 1,501 career points.

His signing with John Lavery’s Phoenix represented his first steps in the professional game, but Williams is taking it all in his stride and enjoying life this side of the pond.

“The fans are great and rowdy and I love it,” said Williams.

“England has been a good experience so far but the transition hasn’t been that much of a big change, it’s just a little faster and I have to be a little smarter.

“Playing for the club and being a part of the BBL has been great here at the Phoenix. We have a good core of guys and the league is competitive and growing. The best thing has been just playing with a new group of guys and trying bring some trophies to the programme.”

The Nix travel to Sheffield Sharks on Friday (7.30pm) in search of their third win of the season.
