Cheshire Phoenix have announced combo-guard Sean McGonagill as their first new signing of the summer.

Having retained the services of captain David Aliu and guard Martyn Gayle, head coach John Lavery has moved for former Brown University standout McGonagill, 23, who comes in on a dual Irish/American passport.

McGonagill graduated from Brown, in Rhode Island, in 2014 and spent a season overseas during the last campaign, plying his trade with German Regionalliga West outfit Giants Duesseldorf where he averaged 19.3 points per game last term.

At Brown, 6ft 1ins McGonagill developed a reputation as an effective shooter from beyond the arc, being able to occupy either the point guard or shooting guard spots on the floor.

McGonagill, who hails from Brookfield, Illinois, dropped 1,113 career points for Ivy League school Brown during his stint there, a total which places him 19th on their all-time list of points scorers, while his college career tally of 156 from three-point land brings him in at seventh on the college's all-time list.

Coach Lavery said: "I am really excited to have Sean on board this year. Sean had a fantastic four years at Brown averaging 17 points per game and shooting 41% from three.

"He was a former co-captain at university which shows his strong leadership on the floor and I have no doubt he will run the Phoenix from the point this year."

McGonagill started every game during his two years at Brown and also proved an effective sharer of the ball, registering a just under four assists per game.

His arrival sees the first new face at the Nix this summer as they look to rebuild their squad following the departures of American trio Taylor King, Demond Watt and Dustin Salisbery at the end of the last campaign under former coach John Coffino.
