Cheshire Phoenix have bolstered their roster with the signing of American point guard Quincy Taylor.

The 24-year-old had been on the Nix’s radar for a number of weeks having been in need of dynamic play caller following the departure of Jorge Ebanks in November.

Taylor, who hails from Kansas, will be making his professional debut for Cheshire having arrived at the club following a spell with NCAA Division One schools University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) and, latterly, Longwood University.

With the Nix at a 7-11 record in the BBL following their excellent 94-85 home triumph over Worcester Wolves at the Cheshire Oaks Arena on Sunday, Taylor’s arrival provides a further boost to head coach John Lavery and his threadbare squad.

“Quincy will fit straight into the squad we have here, he is a true point guard who adds to our existing threat from the perimeter,” said Lavery, who is still in the market for a shooting guard with a UK/Euro passport following the departure of leading scorer Jordan Williams last month.

Taylor began his college career at UAB before transferring to Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, who play in the Big South Conference.

While with the Lancers, Taylor shone in his senior year, averaging 17.2 points per game while shooting an impressive 48% from beyond the arc.

His arrival will see him share the point guard spot with 19-year-old English guard Sedale Hanson-Young, who has caught the eye with some excellent contributions both off the bench and as a starter this season.

Taylor said: “I am very excited to have the opportunity to play for the Phoenix.“I am looking forward to getting there and working with the coaching staff and my new teammates.”

With Cheshire now without a game until Sunday, January 24, when they face a home clash against league leaders Newcastle Eagles in the BBL Trophy, Taylor is likely to be in place to make his debut against Fab Flournoy’s unbeaten side.

The Nix follow up their home clash with the Eagles with a trip north of the border on January 29 when they take on Glasgow Rocks in the BBL at the Emirates Arena (7.30pm).
