New Cheshire Phoenix signing Renaldo Major believes his new club can make a huge impact in the BBL under the stewardship of head coach John Coffino.

Major arrived at the Northgate Arena last week in one of the biggest coups in the franchise’s history, with the 32-year-old having previously held the record for points scored in the NBA D-League as well as playing once in the NBA for the Golden State Warriors.

Major, who has also previously been signed to a contract with the LA Clippers, became Coffino’s seventh addition of the summer and says he can't wait to link up with his new head coach.

“Coach Coffino asked if I wanted to play for him and I said I would because he is a great coach to play for and, after doing my homework, I decided this was a great fit,” said Major, who scored 4,252 points during his spell with the Bakersfield Jam.

“He will have a great impact. He gives his all and demands that from his players. He expects to win every game and losing is not in his vocabulary.”

Major had a health scare back in 2007 when, while trialling with the Denver Nuggets, a loose heart valve was detected during a routine medical, requiring him to have open heart surgery and scuppering his chances of a deal with the NBA side.

“It was difficult at first because I had a real shot at playing for the Denver Nuggets when I found out about my heart,” he said.

“It just showed me how blessed I was because most people don’t live to tell about things like that. But I am good now and it didn’t change my approach, if anything it made me more passionate.”
