A basketball player has made a cross-Pennine switch for the new season.

Ellesmere Port’s Josh McGinn, who lined up for British Basketball League side Mersey Tigers last year, has signed for English Basketball League Division One outfit Leeds Carnegie.

The 20-year-old guard made the move after the Tigers’ franchise was removed from the top tier of British basketball.

However, McGinn will still be able to battle it out against the biggest teams in Britain as Carnegie have an invitational spot in the first round of the BBL Trophy at home to the Glasgow Rocks.

The former Ellesmere Port Catholic High pupil averaged 7.3 points per game for the Tigers in the BBL Championship.

Carnegie head coach Matt Newby is excited by McGinn’s arrival and believes he has a huge future.

He said: “Josh is a young player with serious pedigree and potential. We feel that the Leeds Carnegie basketball programme will provide a platform for him to find another gear. His competitive nature and strong leadership qualities will be an asset to the team.”

Having represented England at junior level, McGinn is excited to continue his development at Leeds.

He said: “I feel like I can bring a large sense of leadership to the team.”
