Matthew Pagan concluded his track campaign with a new personal best and a podium place.

The West Cheshire AC sprinter clocked 49.26 seconds for third position in the under-17 men’s 400m at the Sainsbury’s UK School Games held at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium.

He felt the performance set him up perfectly as he heads into winter training with his head held high.

“I am very pleased with the bronze medal and I was determined to climb the podium after an up and down season,” he said.

“It was a really hard race with a lot of good competitors in it and I was just really happy to get a medal.

“It was a good way to end the year but the start and the rest of it wasn’t great, especially the English Schools’ as I didn’t make the final and I was unhappy about that.”

Pagan was one of three West Cheshire AC members in action at Sheffield, with Emily Ball finishing fifth with 36.97m in the U17 women’s discus, and Sophie Percival hitting 9.11m for seventh position in the U17 women’s shot.

Maisie Tipping and Emma Howe secured medal performances at the Cheshire Junior Multi-Events Championships at Macclesfield where they represented West Cheshire AC.

Tipping finished second in the U13 girls pentathlon and clocked a new sprint hurdles personal best of 11.3 seconds. Howe secured third place in the same age group and threw the javelin beyond the 30m mark.

Robert Little was first home for West Cheshire AC Essar Guilden Sutton Six 10k road race.

The over-35 veteran posted 37 minutes 56 seconds for 22nd position, ahead of club colleagues Andrew Clague (28th in 38:23), Neil Hershaw (36th in 39:02), Robert Freeman (41st in 39:35), Stephen Hillier (49th in 40:32), Alec Jervis (78th in 43:04), Richard Batterham (94th in 44:43), and Stephen Howarth (184th in 56:14).

The race winner was Damian Nicholls (Wilmslow) who clocked 34:00, and the first lady was Wilmslow's Diane McVey in 36:36, with Wilmslow winning the men’s team event and Vale Royal claiming the female team prize.

Neil Carter was West Cheshire AC’s first finisher at the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon, posting 99:05 for 289th position.

Andrew Clague led the way for West Cheshire AC at the second round of the Wirral Multi Terrain League series at Thurstaston where he secured 39th place in 31:52.

Fixtures this weekend include the English Schools Track and Field Combined Events Championships on Saturday and Sunday at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.
