Work will start this month (January 2014) on long-awaited plans for a sheltered housing scheme with facilities for the community at large.

Your Housing Group and contractors Cruden Construction are delivering the Kingsway Extra Care retirement village in Chester on the site of the former Woodfield Primary School.

The three-storey building includes 82 apartments for the over-55s with a mixture of one, two and extra large two bed wheelchair apartments for sale, shared ownership and rent in a secure environment, with care provided 24/7.

Onsite community facilities include landscaped gardens, a bistro, hairdressers, communal lounge, launderette and multi-function activity room.

Mike Watson, director of older people services for Your Housing Group, said: “The country is facing an ever growing need for suitable older persons housing and Your Housing Group is leading the way in developing Extra Care housing. We are very excited to be working alongside Cheshire West and Chester Council to bring this extra care facility to Chester to help meet the housing needs and to bring much needed affordable retirement living solutions to the area.”

The development is the result of partnership working between Your Housing Group, Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA). Funding has been provided by the HCA and Your Housing Group. The Extra Care development will be built by Cruden Construction and is due for completion in spring 2015.

Your Housing took over the Extra Care project after the Cosmopolitan Housing Group pulled out due to financial issues.

And the Extra Care site hit the headlines last summer when council workmen painted yellow zig zag lines on the road outside believing it was still a school, even though Woodfield closed in 2008 and was later demolished.
