An 18-year-old filmmaker from Chester has captured the essence of the city and its surrounds using a drone.

Former Christleton High School student Ben Hanratty has been completing work experience over the summer at video production company Soup Creative and was given the chance to practice with a Sony F5 camera and DJI Phantom Drone.

With a value of approximately £10,000, excluding lenses and accessories, it was essential that Ben didn’t drop any of the equipment.

He said: “As I am only 18 years old, the thought of using this equipment that is used in Hollywood feature films was quite scary! Sony have three of these premium priced cameras, including the Sony f5, F55 and F65; Oblivion starring Tom Cruise and After Earth starring Will Smith are just a few examples of films that these cameras were used on.”

He added: “Drones are fast becoming a serious part of a filmmaker’s kit bag; some of the most recent drones are capable of shooting 4K and BBC News have even started using drones to capture their stories in a way that wouldn’t have been possible five years ago.

“It’s not only filmmakers that are getting their wallets out to try the latest drones; farmers are using them to inspect their crops, as well as search and rescue teams using their drones to send medical supplies to otherwise inaccessible regions.”

Ben has just finished his A Levels at Christleton High School earning himself two Bs and a D and will be moving to London in a few weeks to study film and television at University of the Arts London.
