We always enjoy seeing reminders of what Chester was like many years ago and this week is no exception.

Roy Craven, of Tarporley, sent us two items he discovered, including a cutting from the Chester Chronicle from 20 years ago.

The story, from 1994, which reports on a brand new large housing development being built in the village, is interesting because it shows how much things have changed just two decades later.

At the time, when Mr Craven was chairman of Tarporley Parish Council, the general opinion was how much new housing was desperately needed in the village.

It is a complete contrast to the situation in rural areas these days, where residents have been steadfastly campaigning to stop developers ‘tearing the heart out of their communities’ with large scale developments.

But back in February 1994, the creation of 10 new houses and two bungalows was met with joy from Tarporley residents.

Mr Craven is quoted in the story as saying: “This is one of the best things to happen in the village for a long time.

“We have been campaigning for a long time for this type of housing.”

A Vale Royal councillor agreed, saying: “It is a chance for the lower paid to continue to live in the village.”

Roy also sent in a photograph of a pantomime performance held at Tarporley’s Victory Hall in the late 1940s.

Are you one of the people on the picture, or do you know anyone who is?

If you have any old photographs you’d like to share with us for the Nostalgia page, we’d love to see them. Send your pictures via email to carmella.delucia@trinitymirror.com.
