Launched in 2012 and given a major revamp in 2015, for 2016 Toyota’s hybrid SUV gets a minor makeover. Mostly this is about noise. Less of it will get into the cabin due to improved sound insulation, and even the semi-auto CVT transmission is now quieter. On the other hand, the Touch 2 infotainment system has been upgraded, so you can make more noise inside if you like.

There are three trim levels: Icon, Excel and Excel Plus, although even the entry point sees a long list of standard equipment, from adaptive cruise control to auto air-con and rear-view camera.

The Prius + remains pretty much the one and only seven-seater hybrid MPV. The 1.8-litre petrol engine and the electric motor have been mildly reworked along with the transmission. The claimed fuel consumption is now 68.9mpg with 96g/km of C02 – which means you pay no company car tax.

That’s good, and helps offset the price, which goes from £26,995 up to £31,245. That makes this model quite expensive, but then, what exactly are you going to compare it to?
