Peugeot has set out plans to launch a wide range of new plug-in and hybrid vehicles – with the first models arriving some three years from now.

Speaking at the unveiling of the new 3008 SUV, CEO Maxime Picat said the company is planning full electrification for its smaller cars. Larger vehicles, however, will continue to use traditional engines as part of plug-in hybrid powertrains.

The next-generation 3008 falls into the latter category. But following its market introduction in 2019, Peugeot will introduce all-electric versions of the 208 and 2008.

The 3008 hybrid, which, will use an electric motor on its rear axle to provide all-wheel drive, is expected to offer a range of more than 30 miles on electric power only. Peugeot won’t drop the internal combustion engine from it straightaway – but product boss Laurent Blanchet confirmed that the technology to allow this in a vehicle of its size ‘is very near.’
