The city car class is packed with very good cars like the VW Up, Seat Mii, Skoda Citigo and Suzuki Celerio.

Hyundai’s i10 trumps them all, however. Its practical cabin and nippy manoeuvrability has earned it the Best City Car title in What Car?’s Car of the Year Awards.

The i10 may be small but it’s big on ability and brilliant in the more powerful 1.2-litre petrol version. Still, the 1.0-litre car is certainly no slouch and easy to endorse – especially when it’s available for the £1300-off-list deal we’ve found online.

Though the i10 is billed as a city car, excellent suspension gives it a fine blend of control and compliance on bumpy and/or twisty roads out of town. That confidence-inspiring handling is aided by excellent visibility and well designed cabin controls. Four full-sized adults will have no bother getting comfortable.

Every i10 has six airbags, stability control and a tyre pressure monitoring system, plus a five-year warranty with annual vehicle checks and roadside assistance.

On the downside, its safety kit roster is beaten by some rivals’ offerings, and it doesn’t feel all that premium in terms of cabin materials. You’ll only get Bluetooth if you opt for a higher-spec model, and if you want sat-nav, the aftermarket is the only place to go. You can make your i10 stand out a bit from the crowd by specifying one of the optional paint schemes on offer at £515.
