If you want to avoid a big financial shock on used car repair bills, buy a Peugeot, Suzuki or Ford.

That’s the message coming through from data provided by extended warranty firm WarrantyWise.

Extended warranty companies offer cover for unexpected repairs on cars whose manufacturer warranties have expired. WarrantyWise’s research into warranty claims made on the most popular models up to 12 years old or with up to 120,000 miles on the clock has shown the average cost of an unexpected repair on a used car to be £603.

On average, Porsches, Subarus and BMWs are the most expensive secondhand cars to repair, followed by Audis and Land Rovers.

“If your car is more than three years old, there’s an 84% chance of a mechanical or electrical breakdown over the next three years, so a big bill is often waiting around the corner,” said WarrantyWise CEO Lawrence Whittaker. “Our data shows that repair costs can vary wildly by manufacturer and, in the case of some, come in at well over £700 on average.”
