If mastering 552bhp twin-turbo power and 557lb ft of torque isn’t enough for the average California T driver, Ferrari has now introduced a Handling Speciale package that sharpens performance and dynamic response.

Now, there may well be no such thing as an ‘average’ California driver, but those who simply can’t get their fill of the entry-level drop-tops’s soaring mid-range punch and cornering thrills will relish this latest version’s segue from GT to ‘proper’ sports car.

The optional HS pack brings boosted spring rates (by 16% front and 19% rear), Magneride dampers and tweaked F1-Trac stability-control software, plus a modified exhaust that entices even more sporting character from the 3.9-litre V8. Visually, the model is marked out by a matt silver grille and rear diffuser with black 'fences' plus exhaust tips, along with a discreet cabin plaque.

It seems almost pointless to say that this is one extremely fast car, but it’s how the new package handles that muscle that’s key here. Offering sharper body control and more extreme dynamic limits when pushing hard, it makes the Ferrari even more exciting to drive at speed. There are the inevitable chassis trade-offs on potholed city streets, but by further delineating between the differing characteristics of Comfort and Sport modes, it transforms the model from GT to sports car. Which rather makes the package’s relatively conservative £5,568 premium seem like a two-for-one bargain.

Steering, gearshifts and braking are all as quick and precise as you’d expect, while the whistling, whooshing turbos and roaring, sometimes even intrusive, exhaust take the experience to a new level. All the while, it keeps things user-friendly rather than Ferrari-tradition demanding.

Ultimately, for those who listen to their heart when making their car-buying choices, the Ferrari will always have more appeal than the likes of the Mercedes SL63 AMG and Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. The Handling Speciale pack better suits those who can regularly get out onto the open road rather than habitual city drivers, but for attention seekers and drivers searching to go that extra mile for their thrills, it’s the perfect addition.
