A crash on the main approach road to the Wallasey tunnel caused massive disruption to rushhour this morning (June 6).

Motorists heading to and from Chester were caught up in the delays, which occurred when a BMW impaled itself on the barrier separating the two carriageways on the Dock Road (A5139) at around 6am.

The sole occupant of the car, a female driver, was taken by ambulance to Arrowe Park hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be serious.

While emergency services dealt with the incident, the southbound carriageway heading towards Chester and Wirral was closed.

The northbound carriageway, leading to the tunnel, was reduced to a single lane, causing traffic to back up as far as the M53.

The car was due to be recovered from the barrier shortly before 8am, allowing the road to be re-opened.
