STUDENTS and staff from Rhosnesni High School have been nominated for several Trinity Mirror/ScottishPower Your Champions awards.

Year 11 student Luke Nixon has been nominated as Young Champion of the Year, while the school’s peer mentor scheme is in the running to be Team of the Year and its leader, Denise Payne, is in the running for Champion of the Year.

Luke was born with severe hearing loss but hasn’t let that hold him back, and he competed in five swimming events in the Deaf Olympics in Taiwan.

He raised the money to travel to the games through fundraising events.

Headteacher Gareth Roberts said: “Luke is a brown belt in karate and regularly gives up his time as a volunteer in the 5x60 sports initiative.

“He is firmly of the opinion that nothing should hold you back and is an excellent role mode.”
