THE leader of a sporting club which packs a punch has been nominated for a Your Champions award for the good work it does in the community.

Steve Goodwin has been put forward for the Sporting Champion of the Year for the work he has done at Chester Boxers to provide an inclusive club which, as well as bringing success to local boxers, has drawn in people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Steve said: “We are a registered charity and do boxing and kickboxing for all kinds of people, including children with ADHD, those who have been bullied, or some families who can’t afford to go to the gym – in which case, we can sponsor them and give them a chance.”

“We also have a lot of good kids and we encourage discipline and respect across the spectrum. We try to unlock the talent within them, as some might not have a lot of confidence.

“We also offer discounts for people on the dole, students or in the Army.”

Ann Charlton, who nominated Steve for the honour, said: “He works hard to promote the self-discipline and training needed for sport, all ages are encouraged and there is a wealth of experience to draw from within the gym environment, but the training sessions and circuits he does with his junior section is amazing and should be recognised.

“It shows many youngsters want to do well and will work hard to be part of the whole experience.

“Steve has been committed to this for many years and many, many hours.”
