A TEAM of volunteers who have transformed a railway station are on track for a Your Champions team award.

Since forming in 2010, the Friends of Ellesmere Port Railway Station group has revamped the site from a once dilapidated and rundown area to a bright, welcoming space.

The group is made up of individual volunteers, schoolchildren and students, businesses and local organisations including Cheshire West and Chester Council, Merseyrail, Network Rail and the British Transport Police.

Hard workers have painted the station’s drab fencing and created landscaped gardens and visit regularly to pick up litter and tidy up, while pupils of schools including Westminster Primary School have created artworks to brighten up the platforms.

The effort paid off when the station was named ‘most improved station in Cheshire’ at a county competition.

Mike McCone, one of the Friends, said: “It’s great to hear and I hope we’ll get some more nominations!

“Anything that highlights both Ellesmere Port and Little Sutton stations is a great thing.”
