AN ELLESMERE Port dad who cycled to Paris despite having lost 60% of his sight has been nominated for a Your Champions award.

Dave Cowell, of Pooltown Road, was forced out of his career as a trucker by his illness and could go blind at any time after developing myopic retinal degeneration.

But the setback didn’t stop him from embarking on an epic journey from London to Paris for the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

Dave and his friend Jeff Higginson cycled on a special tandem bike in June this year for the charity.

He had planned to follow behind Jeff on a normal bike but was advised against it by doctors, so held a garden party to raise the £800 needed for the specialist bike.

The pair have already raised more than £5,060 for the RNIB, more than doubling their £2,500 target.

Dave’s remarkable bravery has earned him a nomination for Person of the Year in the Your Champions awards.
