WREXHAM reserves crashed to a disappointing 6-1 defeat yesterday at the hands of Crewe Alexandra at Reaseheath.
A Dragons side made up of a healthy mix of youth and experience, were always up against it after conceding three goals in the opening 10 minutes against a rampant Crewe outfit.
And Wrexham’s cause was not helped by three of their starting line up – Kai Edwards, Matthew Hurdman and Rob Pearson – playing in a youth team match on Tuesday night against Airbus UK Broughton.
The match as a contest was all but over after the opening 10 minutes, in which Alexandra blazed into a 3-0 early lead, but Wrexham did hit the woodwork before Alex ensured a 5-0 half time lead.
Shaun Pejic headed a corner goalwards on 24 minutes, but with defenders on the line, Michael Proctor stuck out a toe to divert the ball only to cannon his effort off the underside of the crossbar.
Two more Crewe efforts ensured a comfortable half-time advantage, while they added to their tally soon after the interval.
Proctor did pull one back in the final five minutes, as he cut in from the right and beat a number of Alex defenders on the edge of the box before finding the top corner of the net.
For Crewe, Calvin Zola netted a brace as did Mark Carrington, both players having featured for the home side in Tuesday’s FA Cup clash against Millwall.
WREXHAM: Danny Staples (Tom Bainbridge 60), Carl Tremarco, Shaun Pejic, Darran Kempson, Kai Edwards, Luke Carding, Ashley Williams (Rob Pearson 10), Levi Mackin, Wes Baynes, Michael Proctor, Matthew Hurdman.
