FIVE Wrexham Fencing Club starlets have won call-ups to the Commonwealth Junior Championships – as another moves to make his Olympic dream a reality.
Carolyn Benson, 18, Ben Hughes, 17, Ben Roberts, 17, Daniel Lumb, 16, and Stephanie Collister, 13, jet out to Malaysia next month for one of the top events on the fencing calendar.
Their selection means 25% of the Wales squad will consist of Wrexham fencers. That is a remarkable achievement for the club, which, along with parents and relatives, Welsh Fencing and DSV Global Transport and Logistics Ltd Air and Sea Division, have helped the quintet raise the high costs for the trip.
David Gregory, meanwhile, has swapped Wrexham for Team Melia. The epee specialist, nicknamed ‘The Prodigy’, has left his job at Iceland’s head office in Deeside to take up a full-time coaching position at the Midlands-based club, run by former Wales senior international fencer Lynne Melia.
David, a former British youth champion, made it his aim to compete for Great Britain at the 2016 Olympic Games, but now he is hoping to be ready for London in 2012.
