Pupils and staff of Upton-by-Chester High School celebrated World Book Day in style.
World Book Day is the biggest celebration of reading and books in the world, and the school put on events to encourage reading and spread the love of books throughout the school community.
The English department organised a popular staff bookswap in the morning, with homemade cakes sold in aid of the Roald Dahl Marvellous Children’s Charity.
At lunchtime, the international learning hub and the English department hosted a bookswap for pupils.
Everyone brought a book they enjoyed reading and left it for somebody else to choose. There was music, fun literary quizzes and goodies for all.
Andrew Crozier, head of the English department, said: “There was a real buzz around the event. It was fantastic to see our staff and students coming together to celebrate reading in this way.”
In a related project, the religious studies department also invited pupils to bring in a book to take part in Oxfam’s Message in a Book Campaign.
Students wrote an open letter highlighting global poverty and placed it inside their book.
These books will be sold in the local Oxfam shop and the pupils’ messages will be spread to Oxfam’s customers.
