A WIDOW whose husband was killed in a road accident at a known blackspot has called for urgent safety measures to be brought in to protect other motorists.

Motorcyclist Leslie Knight, 37, was killed last month after his Honda bike collided with a Ford Transit van while travelling along the A556 towards Northwich.

The van had been pulling right out of the Smoker car park and turning right, close to the junction of Plumley Moor Road.

Highways Agency bosses acknowledge that the Plumley Moor Road junction has a 'very poor' accident record and have set aside more than half a million pounds to make the junction safer.

They plan to install a safe haven for motorists waiting to turn right into Plumley Moor Road.

But Mr Knight's widow Amanda wants action taken immediately.

'Something should have been done by now,' said Mrs Knight, of Tealby Close.

'Something as simple as the red and white blocks at Lostock Green, to prevent anybody turning right, could be put there. Something as small as this could prevent loss of life.

'Leslie's brother goes along that road everyday and he says the number of near misses he sees makes him want to close his eyes.'

Highways Agency area manager Arthur Ashburner said: 'Funding is already in place and we aim to start this important safety scheme soon.'

The scheme would remove the need for right-turning vehicles to cross the flow of traffic when accessing Plumley Moor Road and would prevent right turns out of the Smoker car park.
