Whitby High School crowns its new poet laureate

A TALENTED student has been crowned the Whitby High School’s latest poet laureate.

Year 12 pupil Sophie Clare was awarded the title after triumphing in a poetry competition organised by the school’s English department.

Sophie – whose winning entry was entitled There you go – will take over from last year’s poet laureate, Jonathon Saunders, who now studies English Literature at Oxford University.

The runners-up were Jasmine Adderton with her poem Clown and Jessica Shakespeare with Almighty.

Sophie, Jasmine and Jessica will be involved in promoting poetry throughout the school until the end of the academic year.
