VICS manager Steve King is deciding whether or not Chester City defender Paul Butler is the right man to bolster Vics’ rearguard for the rest of the season.

The former Sunderland and Leeds star is not wanted by the League Two outfit and was offered to Vics along with midfieldmen Tony Dinning and David Mannix, although the latter may complete a return move to Accrington Stanley.

All three players – of which only two would be able to sign on loan for Vics under FA rules – have had disciplinary issues at the Deva Stadium.

And Butler, who was brought back into the side by City boss Mark Wright, has been struggling with a calf injury.

King, who was unavailable as the Chronicle went to press, will have the final say on the potential signings.

Any new arrivals may have to wait for their first game as tomorrow’s Blue Square Premier clash at Woking is doubtful due to the weather.

The game, which kicks off at 7.45pm, is due to be screened live on Setanta Sports and if given the go-ahead, is a must-win game for Vics and King, who has still not yet tasted victory since taking over as manager at the start of November.

Meanwhile, Vics owner Jim Rushe confirmed he has received a bid from a third party for the Marston’s Arena.

A North East firm visited the ground yesterday which it hopes to make the centrepiece of a new sports village on the nine-acre Wincham site.

If it became landlord, then Vics would still play their football at the ground and Rushe would remain as chairman but the club would not own the stadium.

The deal would also mean that Rushe would get back the £250,000 he has invested in Vics already.

He said: “They are a sports stadium developer that are currently building sports villages. They are very keen and are looking at the stadium with a view to buying it and then renting it back to us but it’s fairly early days with regards to this offer.

“I am still hoping that Northwich Vics will be able to buy the ground and that is what the club is trying to do. Having our own ground is very important.”
