NIGHT bus services are coming under siege from vandals who attack them with stones and bricks, drivers warned last night.

Drivers fear it is only a matter of time before the vandalism results in death or serious injury.

Cheshire police are launching a zero tolerance policy to beat the violence plaguing bus routes in Ellesmere Port.

Chris Chandler, a senior driver in the town with First Buses, said: "One of the favourite things is to hurl eggs and stones at the buses. Missiles hit the windscreens, which could be very dangerous.

"Young people think it is funny to throw an egg. But all it takes is for one to shatter a windscreen and injure a passenger.

"We have incidents almost every evening. It is frightening for the drivers as there have been a lot of close calls."

Ellesmere Port sergeant Steve Bailey said youngsters could face assault charges for the egg attacks. He said: "We are aware of these attacks. We take them extremely seriously."
