TWO motorists have died and two others left in a critical condition after a lorry left the carriageway on the M56 and collided with a number of vehicles.
Police believe the HGV left the eastbound carriageway, between junction 11 at Preston Brook and junction 12 at Clifton, at 11.15am yesterday straight into the path of oncoming traffic.
It is believed to have drifted into the westbound carriageway where it hit another HGV, a car and a van.
Cheshire police spokesman Alan Creevy said two people had died as a result of the accident, and two others had been left in a critical condition. They were taken to both the Countess of Chester and Warrington General hospitals.
Mr Creevy said personal details of the deceased were not yet known, and they would probably not be named for a few days.
Officers are still sorting out who was driving what in the accident. Among the vehicles involved are a Plumb Center lorry and a Dickinson Catering van.
As the collision was underneath the roundabout near junction 12, police have been diverting traffic from the exit to the entrance sliproads, taking it over the top of the crash site.
'Traffic was moving, although it was moving slowly,' said Mr Creevy.
