A STUNNING tribute has been made to Northwich’s fallen hero Craig Jones.

The World Supersport rider, from Greenbank, was honoured at the new Parkalgar Autodromo Circuit, in Portugal.

Turn nine has been named “Craig Jones Corner” in memory of the promising young star, who tragically died after an accident during a race at Brands Hatch in August.

Craig, who was 22, rode for the Parkalgar Honda team who now own the circuit, near Portimao.

Turn nine is described as one of the most technical on the circuit and is a fitting tribute to such a promising talent.

In addition, plans are well under way to erect a five-tonne stone memorial statue at the entrance to the circuit, showing Craig celebrating crossing the finishing line.

Craig’s mum Yvonne said: “It is amazing, we are very lucky because not a lot of riders get this.

“We flew out on Friday to Portugal but the statue was not ready yet so we are going to go back in December.

“But we’ve seen photographs of it and it is wonderful.”

The Portuguese circuit hosted its inaugural event as part of the final round of the World Superbikes season.

Poignantly, Jones remains the team’s best placed rider in the overall standings, finishing the season in seventh position.
