CORKY the cockatiel is challenging for a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest in the world.

The oldest on record at the moment is 23 but Corky's owner, Trevor Sandland, of James Hall Street, Nantwich, says that at the ripe old age of 27 his pet is the real record-breaker.

Trevor said: 'I am trying to get Corky in the record books. I have had him since 1974 so he is a lot older than the record holder.'

The story of how Corky joined the family is quite odd.

Trevor explained: 'There was a story in the Chronicle in 1974 about a missing cockatiel. The bird was found on The Broadway in Nantwich by someone who knew I kept birds, so it was brought to me.

'I kept it for a while and grew quite attached to it. When the owners came to claim it, I went to a pet shop in Sandbach and bought Corky, and he's still here, chattering away.'
