FOG failed to dampen the spirits of a team aiming to climb the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours.

The men from Ellesmere Port firm Budget Maintenance battled against the elements to climb Scafell Pike, Snowdon and Ben Nevis in 26 hours.

One of their drivers, Michael Maitland, said: “The team did really well and to date have raised a little over their £2,000 target for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.”

The team ascended and descended Ben Nevis in five hours, Scafell Pike in three hours 50 minutes and Snowdon in three hours 55 minutes.

The team from Budget Maintenance was joined by two drivers and – for the Snowdon climb – by 14-year-old Ryan Kane on Friday.

They included Colin Brotherston, 56, head engineer at Budget Maintenance, who acted as driver and massage man; Paul Shackleton, 30, a supervising plumber at the company from Liverpool; company director Andy Roberts, 39, from Ellesmere Port; managing director Michael Kane, 40, of Ellesmere Port, who took his 14-year-old son Ryan along to scale Snowdon; Neil Rodgers 27, from Helsby, a plumber; Benadict Farrity, 28, from North Wales, an apprentice plumber; and Michael Maitland, 61, who was once a long-distance runner with the now renamed Rivacre Runners and Joggers club in Ellesmere Port, who acted as driver and photographer.
