A TALENTED dancer from Wrexham has been selected to perform at the ceremony marking the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

Catrin Wilson from Gresford is currently working hard on her dance routines in preparation for the three-day extravaganza later this month.

The arts complex opens with a star-studded programme of events including a gala concert, a music, sound and light spectacular and a Royal Gala performance featuring Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel.

Also appearing to mark the occasion will be one of the legendary three tenors Jose Carreras, Charlotte Church, star of musical theatre and Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em actor Michael Crawford, actor Ioan Gruffydd, comedian Max Boyce, singer Elaine Paige, comedian Griff Rhys Jones, actor Matthew Rhys and singer/ballroom dancer Aled Jones.

Catrin, a year 11 pupil at Darland School, will have a hectic weekend making three appearances in all.

She will be dancing with the Northop-based Diversions Associate Scheme and the North East Wales Dance group.

She started dancing at the age of three and is really looking forward to the event.

'I'm very nervous because this is such a high profile event and there will be a lot of celebrities and important people there but I'm very excited too,' she said. 'This is a very special occasion at a wonderful venue.'

Darland School headteacher Chris Hughes said: 'Catrin has a lot of talent and this is a fantastic opportunity for her. We're all really pleased and wish her well.'
