Teacher boom bucks trend

WOODFORD Lodge High School has bucked a national trend - by taking on extra teachers.

At a time when schools across the country are struggling to attract new talent into the profession, the Winsford school has taken on a dozen new teachers, including four extra members of staff.

Head Steve Meeks says it is all thanks to the school's success in persuading parents to send their children to the local school instead of institutions outside the town in Weaverham and Northwich.

The start of the autumn term has seen Woodford Lodge's pupil numbers swell and the school had to create another tutorial group and two additional teaching classes.

Delighted Mr Meeks said: 'I think people are beginning to realise that there is no need to send their children out of Winsford for their education.

'The school is starting to grow and people are realising what a good school we are. This has got to be down to the quality of our staff.'

School governor Ian Lewsey, chairman of its staffing committee, added: 'It is great Woodford Lodge school is growing at a time when the Government is struggling to attract people into the profession.

'We have started the new school year with a full complement of staff, which is great when schools all over the country are having problems because of staff shortages.

'It has not been easy, but when the teachers have seen the school they have been happy to join us.

'We are delighted with the quality of our team.'

The school has 12 new teachers, including replacements for staff that moved on or retired.

The school's growing reputation has been enhanced by excellent Ofsted reports and recent good results in A-level and GCSE examinations.

And a number of initiatives have been introduced aimed at boosting pride in the school and helping the children learn.

Mr Meeks said: 'Blazers are now being worn by all but the oldest children. There is no doubt that students feel it adds a little something to their appearance and I suspect they feel a little more confident and proud while wearing them.'
