WREXHAM manager Denis Smith is set to impress on his players the need for personal discipline in order to avoid needless bookings and sendings-off.

So far this season, the club have already picked up 23 cautions and have also had six players sent off, an appalling record that could land Wrexham in trouble with the Football League.

If that were not enough, Smith knows he will be without suspended midfielder Steve Thomas for tomorrow's visit to Huddersfield Town, while both Shaun Holmes and Darren Ferguson will miss the Welsh derby against Cardiff City on Sunday week.

"We have a small enough squad as it is without shooting ourselves in the foot like that," said the Dragons boss.

And he admitted that the loss of Thomas for the McAlpine Stadium clash was a blow. The Welsh under-21 international was one of two Wrexham players in the latest Division Two side of the week - the other was Keith Hill - and Smith added: "He's been playing very well of late and I think he and Darren Ferguson will form a good partnership if we can keep them playing together for long enough."

Ferguson, absent for the midweek 1-1 draw with Blackpool through illness, is expected to return tomorrow and Smith is optimistic that knocks picked up by substitutes Michael Blackwood and Andy Morrell will not prevent them from being available for the trip to Yorkshire.

Huddersfield, currently on the fringe of the top six, will provide another stern examination of Wrexham's improving defensive record, which has resulted in an unbeaten four-match sequence.

Delighted as he is with the side's progress, Smith warned: "We have to take things a game at a time and the first priority is to get ourselves to safety in the second division.

"Then and only then can we start looking to build towards the next stage."

Wrexham fans intending to travel to Bournemouth for the second division clash on November 10 are being warned to buy their tickets early and in person.

The match marks the reopening of the Cherries' new home, The Fitness First stadium, which has been built on the site of Dean Court and is expected to have an initial capacity of 9,600.

Bournemouth have asked Wrexham to limit ticket sales to personal callers only because of fears that their own fans will try to buy tickets for the away section of the ground.

Tickets are on sale during normal office hourse and on matchdays, although not in the hour prior to next Tuesday's LDV Vans Trophy match with Huddersfield and the Cardiff game on November 4.
