ATHLETICS: Darren Rowlands and Lisa Morley led Wrexham Athletic Club’s charge in the penultimate North Wales Cross Country League race in Wrexham.

Rowlands was the fifth man home in 30.50mins and was followed by: 12 Daniel Weston (32.12), 59 Robert Jones (36.13), 74 Adrian Bryan (37.22), 76 Eddie Hughes (37.27), 87 Geoff Richards (38.10), 108 Chris Evans (39.43), 114 Arthur Egan (40.33), 129 Ian Carson (42.13), 133 Aidan Wafer (42.41), 136 Jonathan Davies (43.32), 148 Steve Samuels (45.57), 152 Shaun Partington (49.23), 153 Mike Edwards (49.48).

Morley was the 12th woman past the post in 21.55 and was followed by: 19 Alison Whitelaw (22.42), 43 Margaret Docking (25.30), 55 Kim Harrison (28.23), 56 Gill Csizmadia (28.32).

Peter Norman won the M70s race in 25.26 while Geraint Jeffreys was third in the Under 17s men’s in 21.57.

Ian James, in 23rd (79.13), was the fastest Wrexham finisher at the following day’s Four Villages Half Marathon in Helsby, followed by: 221 Tim Bent (91.18), 399 Robert Pierce (97.44), 722 James Sloan (107.15), 1,158 Norman (120.47), 1,424 Ros Adams (136.15).

Stephen Williams won three gold medals for Wrexham Special Olympics Athletic Club at the North Wales Indoor Track & Field Championships in Deeside.

The winners of each event were: women’s soft ball throw – Gaynor Jones (14.40m); men’s soft ball throw group one – Williams (22.46m); men’s soft ball throw group two – Tony Gittins (13.50); women’s standing long jump – Hannah Charnley (1.32); men’s standing long jump group one – Williams (1.88); men’s standing long jump group two – Kevin Morris (1.10); women’s 60m sprint – Laura Watson (14.3secs); men’s 60m sprint group one – Williams (9.9); men’s 60m sprint group two – Billy Roberts (13.2).

Clays medal winners

GOLF: Phil Davies, Paul Jeffs and Dilwyn Jones toasted victories in Clays Golf Club’s January Medal.

Davies (77-9=68) won Division One from V Thind (81-11=70) and Colin Bryan (82-6=76), Division Two went the way of Jeffs (84-13=71) from Gareth Roberts (85-12=73) and Mike Holt (88-14=74), with Jones (88-18=70) running away with Division Three from Craig Jones (100-23=77) and Robert Jarvis (97-20=77).

Bryan E Jones (77-11=66) just won the following day’s Winter League match from Neil Gledhill (89-23=66) and David Parry (76-9=67).

There was Seniors Kitty Competition glory for Fred Court and Brian Downes (33) on a countback from Peter Fraser and Vinny Simpson (33), with Bill Parry and Mike Carding (31) third.

Druids well beaten

FOOTBALL: NEWI Cefn Druids went down to a 4-0 Welsh Premier League defeat at Newtown on Saturday despite the hosts playing 55 minutes of the match with 10 men.

Druids have a Welsh Cup fourth-round tie at top-flight rivals Airbus UK Broughton tomorrow (7.30pm).

Lex XI drew 1-1 at home to Buckley Town in the Cymru Alliance on Saturday while Gresford Athletic lost 2-0 at fellow strugglers Llanfairpwll.

Third-from-bottom Gresford host rock-bottom Llandyrnog United on Saturday while Lex face a big Welsh Cup fourth-round clash at Bridgend Town (both 2pm).
