WREXHAM Labour MP Ian Lucas has welcomed “encouraging” moves toward listing new sports events for free-to-air television.

He spoke as the Davies review – headed by former FA executive director David Davies – began its work.

The review is to look into the listing of sports events – which protects the events for free-to-air broadcasters.

Mr Lucas has pushed for the listing of events such as the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup.

He believes making events available for free-to-air broadcast is a vital part of encouraging young people to develop and maintain interest in sport.

Mr Lucas said: “While I understand that, as the review is under way, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport is quite rightly not commenting, these reports are encouraging.

“The availability of sporting events on free-to-air channels is vital to maintain interest, especially among young people.”
